Large Language Models (LLMs) are increasingly used for knowledge-based reasoning tasks, yet understanding when they rely on genuine knowledge versus superficial heuristics remains challenging. We investigate this question through entity comparison tasks by asking models to compare entities along numerical attributes (e.g., ``Which river is longer, the Danube or the Nile?''), which offer clear ground truth for systematic analysis. Despite having sufficient numerical knowledge to answer correctly, LLMs frequently make predictions that contradict this knowledge. We identify three heuristic biases

In brief

Models can know the numbers and still answer against them. When asked which of 2 entities has the larger value of a numerical attribute, LLMs frequently contradict the ranking implied by their own extracted attribute values, and numerical accuracy is consistently higher than pairwise accuracy.

The setup covers 10 Wikidata attributes (river length, city population, atomic number, Scoville units, stadium capacity, etc.), up to 1000 entities each, 12 prompts per pair (6 templates x 2 orderings), across Llama3-1B/8B, OLMo2-1B/7B/32B, Qwen3-1.7B/8B/32B, Mistral-7B and Mistral-24B.

On a Balanced-Orthogonal Subset that decorrelates popularity, mention order, co-occurrence and internal knowledge, order is the dominant cue: Qwen3-1.7B reaches a risk ratio near 2. Popularity sits at RR 1.1-1.25, co-occurrence at 1.05-1.15, and reliance on internal knowledge grows with scale to RR around 1.5. A logistic meta-predictor using only the 3 surface cues beats following the model's own numbers for the smallest models. Cohen's d for the extracted-value gap rises from about 0.04 at 1B to about 0.79 at 32B, so larger models defer to numbers when the gap is wide and knowledge is stable. Qwen3 thinking mode adds 5-9 percentage points to pairwise accuracy and a similar amount to internal consistency, but hand-inspected traces often rationalize a pre-chosen answer.

The cue isolation is well designed; the strategy-selection analysis is descriptive, not causal, and no mechanistic or weight-editing test was run. Zero-shot only, numerical attributes only, no multi-entity ranking or open-domain QA.

Treat a model's stated facts as a poor predictor of its comparative judgments, especially below 8B.
