Although Large Vision-Language Models (VLMs) have significantly advanced embodied navigation, their direct deployment remains challenging, as existing methods often force VLMs into unnatural action spaces that misalign with their 2D pre-training priors, compounded by rigid reasoning schedules and inefficient memory management. To overcome these limitations, we propose TAMP-Nav, a unified framework for efficient embodied navigation. First, we introduce a Pixel-to-3D Action Formulation (Point) that reformulates navigation into 2D visual prompting. Specifically, the VLM merely selects 2D pixels,

In brief

Letting a vision-language model point at a 2D pixel, then projecting that pixel to 3D with depth for a SLAM controller, works far better than asking the same model to emit metric waypoints or atomic actions. The gain is the largest single effect in the paper.

TAMP-Nav builds on Qwen2.5-VL-7B, fine-tuned on MultiNav-CoT (90k VLN-CE trajectories with Gemini 2.5 Flash chain-of-thought at mined key nodes), then aligned with a two-level GRPO that adds step rewards to trajectory rewards. Evaluated on R2R-CE and RxR-CE val-unseen, a long-horizon subset of 5927 trajectories over 12.5 meters, and 100 real-robot trials per method.

SR reaches 66.2% on R2R-CE and 65.7% on RxR-CE, up from 55.7% SFT-only. Swapping Pixel-to-3D for a NavFoM-style metric waypoint costs 24.8/25.2 SR points. Learned CoT triggering hits 66.2% SR at a 26.3% CoT ratio versus 66.8% for dense CoT and 60.1% for fixed 1/3. Inference averages 16.58s per task versus 37.47s for StreamVLN. Real-world SR was 60.0% versus 49.0% and 53.0%.

Ablations are block-wise under matched budgets with the same SLAM controller and 1 training epoch, so the action-space and memory effects are reasonably isolated. Only 1 base model family; RL uses privileged simulator rewards; real-world is zero-shot transfer with no on-robot RL; STI encodes no height, so multi-floor is untested.

If you are wiring a VLM to a robot, change the action space before changing the model.
