https://arxiv.org/abs/2608.18581(opens in a new tab)Although Large Language Models (LLMs) encode rich factual knowledge in their parameters, reliably recalling and verifying such knowledge remains a key bottleneck in factual question answering. Existing end-to-end methods entangle knowledge elicitation with reasoning, making it difficult to determine whether correct answers arise from parametric knowledge or the input context. To address this challenge, we propose VAKE (Verifiable Activation of Parametric KnowledgE), a two-stage reinforcement-learning framework that externalizes latent parametric knowledge through explicit Priming and transfers
In brief
Training a model to write out bridging facts as explicit triples, then dropping the triples at inference, improves multi-hop QA more than reasoning-oriented RL alone, and the elicited facts are mostly not present in the retrieved context.
VAKE is 2-stage GRPO. Stage 1 (Priming) trains a policy to insert relational triples into a deliberately insufficient retrieved subgraph (gold-answer triples dropped, capped at K = 10), rewarded only by whether a separate frozen answerer then gets the gold answer. Stage 2 trains the same policy to answer directly. Backbones: Qwen2.5-7B-Instruct and Qwen3-8B; 3 in-distribution multi-hop sets (2Wiki, HotpotQA, MuSiQue) and 4 OOD sets (Bamboogle, NQ, TriviaQA, PopQA), scored by a GPT-4o judge-EM.
Priming alone beats the strongest non-reasoning baseline by 2.4 and 2.2 points in-distribution. With CoT and no triples at inference, VAKE beats GRPO by 6.1 and 2.6 points. OOD averages reach 38.9 and 41.4. A GPT-4o judge labels over 80% of inserted triples parameter-originated; masked-slot probing gives VAKE-P 35.2 tail accuracy against below 27.0 for frozen backbones up to 72B.
The frozen answerer and fixed subgraph do isolate the inserted triples as the only free variable, and stage ablations plus a matched-RL-budget GRPO baseline are reported. But attribution rests on an LLM judge scoring its own family's outputs, the retriever is deliberately crippled, and only Qwen models were tested; Qwen3-0.6B showed no gain. General-capability scores (GSM8K, MMLU, IFEval, AIME24/25) are roughly flat.
If you treat recall failure as separate from encoding failure, this gives you a rewardable, inspectable handle on the former.
