https://arxiv.org/abs/2608.19842(opens in a new tab)Agentic reinforcement learning (RL) has become a critical stage in the post-training of large language models. Existing critic-free, group-relative methods estimate policy advantages from multiple rollouts, avoiding the substantial memory overhead of conventional proximal policy optimization (PPO) and achieving strong performance on long-horizon interactive tasks. Despite their success, recent studies revealed three limitations: (1) Lack explicit value generalization and effective temporal credit assignment; (2) Suffer from potential advantage collapse in long-horizon complex tasks; (3) Requir
In brief
An LLM can act as its own critic by reading state and action values off two reserved vocabulary logits at causal boundaries within the same autoregressive stream, removing both the separate critic and group sampling while keeping turn-level credit assignment.
SAPO reserves 2 vocabulary entries as a value basis, reads V before the first response token and Q after the last, excludes those tokens from the action softmax, and trains them with clipped regression toward lambda-returns and an on-policy SARSA target. Advantages come from trajectory-level GAE with batch normalization over turns, from 1 rollout per task. Tested on ALFWorld and WebShop with Qwen2.5-1.5B-Instruct and 7B-Instruct, 150 training steps, against PPO, GRPO, RLOO, EMPG, GiGPO, ReAct, Reflexion, GPT-4o and Gemini-2.5-Pro.
At 1.5B, SAPO reaches 90.1% aggregate ALFWorld success, +35.7 over PPO and +17.3 over GRPO, and 100.0 on Clean and Heat. At 7B it reaches 94.0% ALFWorld, 88.6 WebShop score, 82.4% success. Mean gains over PPO and GRPO are reported as +15.1 and +12.1 points. Per-iteration runtime drops from 451.2 s to 301.4 s, a 33.2% reduction.
Results are measured over 3 seeds, with a runtime breakdown isolating the removed critic stages (61.4 s). No component ablation table appears here despite being posed as a research question, and much of the generation-time saving (306.4 s to 221.4 s) reflects shorter episodes rather than architecture. 1 model family, 2 environments, no equal-rollout-budget comparison against GiGPO, which matches or beats SAPO on WebShop at 1.5B.
If you are paying for a policy-scale critic, this suggests the backbone may already be able to host the value head for free.
