https://arxiv.org/abs/2608.23493(opens in a new tab)Self-reflection is a powerful mechanism for credit assignment in human learning, converting sparse outcome feedback into actionable guidance. However, its potential for post-training Large Language Models (LLMs) remains underexplored. We propose Self-Reflective Policy Optimization (SRPO), a framework that internalizes this capability. SRPO enables LLMs to analyze their own completed trajectories, synthesize errors into concise "reflection patches," and use reflection-conditioned teacher scores on student on-policy rollouts as dense token-level training signals. This process effectively transfo
In brief
A model conditioned on its own hindsight reflection can act as a teacher for itself, and distilling that teacher's per-token scores beats distilling from a 72B external teacher. SRPO runs 2 stages: generate a compact reflection patch (2-5 bullet points) from a failed rollout, prepend it to the original prompt as a "reset with memory", then train the student on its own on-policy rollouts using per-token reverse KL against the reflection-conditioned teacher.
Tested on Qwen3-1.5B/8B/32B plus Llama-3.1-8B-Instruct, across AIME'24, MATH-500, GSM8K, DeepScaleR, WebShop, ALFWorld and SWE-Bench-Lite, against GRPO, PPO, SFT, on-policy distillation, Reflexion and Self-Refine.
Qwen3-8B reaches 73.3% on AIME'24 versus 68.0% for GRPO and 72.5% for Qwen3-72B distillation, at roughly 3.8x fewer total FLOPs than GRPO. Agentic success: 64.7% WebShop, 76.8% ALFWorld, 31.2% SWE-Bench-Lite. Math retention after code adaptation is 95.2% versus 87.2% for GRPO.
An 11-row ablation isolates each design choice: removing reflection costs 7.5 points on AIME'24, forward KL costs 3.9, no state reset costs 7.0, and verbose reflections hurt. Compute comparisons are reported, though FLOP accounting is the authors' own.
All numbers are self-reported with no independent replication, AIME'24 is 30 problems, reflection quality was judged by GPT-4, and 23% of failed reflections stem from knowledge the model lacks. If you assumed self-generated feedback is too weak to train on, this is evidence against that.
